In memory of the glory, sacrifice and sorrow of the Croatian War of Independence 1991~1995. | U sjećanje na slavu, žrtvu i tugu Domovinskog rata 1991.~1995.
The IN MEMORIAM / U SPOMEN project is a multi-dimensional design/arts project that is at the centre of Antonia Jolic’s PhD practice. It will act as a platform for practice-led design research that will further research enquiry into her PhD exegesis.
Through participatory arts-based civil society initiatives, the IN MEMORIAM / U SPOMEN project seeks to identify narratives and visions of cultural memory related to the Croatian War of Independence (Homeland War/Domovinski rat) which took place in 1991~1995. In collaboration with Croatian state cultural and educational institutions and various communities throughout the country, the project aims to engage with the wider public through participatory design. The overall objective of IN MEMORIAM / U SPOMEN project is to increase understanding of the importance of post-memory in addressing broader social issues in Croatia. It is designed to stimulate dialogue and promote collaboration between state institutions and the public, while simultaneously reaching out to key target audiences.
As Researcher-in-Residence with the Homeland War Museum Dubrovnik (Muzej domovinskog rata Dubrovnik) Croatia, Antonia has assumed the strategic role of facilitator of the IN MEMORIAM / U SPOMEN project — between the museum, City of Dubrovnik and its public. Through the process of participatory design, the project is co-designed with various stakeholders. The participants of the project are students from the University of Dubrovnik, members of the Association of Croatian Veterans (Dubrovnik branch), as well as the City of Dubrovnik authority.
The project is run under the patronage of Croatian Memorial Foundation and the City of Dubrovnik.

Antonia is both a design practitioner and an academic. She has more than 20 years of experience working in design. Her work ranges from brand development, packaging, publishing, exhibition design, environmental graphics, as well as new media. In her academic work she investigates how, using design thinking as a methodology, designers are able to engage and contribute to the needs of a society on a more meaningful level.
Through her PhD work she is investigating cultural memory and looking at how Design can facilitate and mediate participatory and co-creative processes via community-initiated projects within educational and cultural institutions. By actively engaging visitors in projects of cultural memory, the objective is to identify how these might aid in the recovery and transition of post-conflict cultural identity.
As Researcher-in-Residence for the IN MEMORIAM / U SPOMEN project, Antonia has assumed the strategic role of facilitator between the cultural institution and its public through the process of design thinking and participation design.
